2/1 Billy Jackson is currently the longest serving member of the Decatur City Council. A native of the “River City”, he is a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Councilman Jackson was elected to represent District 1, but is a staunch advocate for all of the citizens in the city. Some of his City Council assignments include that of the Community Development Department, which is tasked to stabilize lower income neighborhoods and to promote economic empowerment. The Councilman also works in conjunction with Decatur Youth Services,
fostering and supporting a community-wide effort to address the challenges that face the youth of the city.
A proud graduate of Alabama A&M University, we are happy to recognize this outstanding pioneer for his work. Decatur City Councilman Billy Jackson, we thank you for your tireless contributions and for your dedicated service.

2/2 Maurice Wright II is the Servant Pastor of the St John AME Church in Huntsville. He leads God’s People at the historic edifice that has been a staple of the Huntsville community for more than 140 years. The Pastor is the embodiment, and a true example of what it is to be a leader of God’s people. A loving family man, he is blessed to have Reverend Joretha Wright as his partner in marriage. They are happy to be the parents of four wonderful children. Pastor Wright is an amazing advocate who has served God’s people throughout Huntsville, and in various positions in the AME Church. He has presided as the Connectional Director of Music and Christian Arts of the African Methodist Episcopal Church worldwide. And, Pastor Wright has also served as the co-director of Evangelism, and the Chairman of Finance for the 9th Episcopal District. A strong, resilient and zealous leader, we are astounded by his many accomplishments. We are proud to recognize this Morehouse man, Maurice Wright II for Black History Month.

Michelle Watkins is the first Black Woman to be elected to the Huntsville City Council, winning the District (1) runoff last September. Pledging to work hard for the people in the city, Michelle is filled with complete gratitude. She previously served on the Huntsville City School Board, also representing District (1). During her tenure on the Board, she saw improvement of student reading scores, and provided continued mentoring opportunities to students promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) throughout North Huntsville Schools. A longtime community advocate, she works passionately to get things done for the city she loves. Councilwoman Michelle Watkins excelled in her role as a member of the Huntsville City School Board, and continues to do the same on the Huntsville City Council. She is creating a legacy that is HISTORIC!!! We proudly acknowledge her for being a positive force, and a voice working to make Huntsville a stronger and more unified community.

Marc Lacy is an award winning poet who is gifted with the ability of utilizing words, writing pointed dissertations and conveying meaningful language. An Alumnus of Alabama A&M University, he is a wordsmith who has not only written books, but has headlined literary and spoken word events all across the country. Marc is a popular DJ, and actor who has been featured in a number of television commercials. He has created a HISTORIC legacy by speaking truth-to-power via his social media blogs. Mr. Lacy empowers and lifts others with his words of inspiration, motivation and positivity. A former AAMU Bulldog basketball star, he credits his faith in God and love of family for providing the energy he needs to succeed. A major influencer and humble servant in our community, we are blessed to have Marc Lacy here in the Huntsville area. We are so happy to recognize him for Black History Month.

Pammie Jimmar is the President of the Athens-Limestone Chamber of Chamber. A hardworking and amazing public servant, she cares so deeply about the community she serves. In a recent television interview, Ms. Jimmar said one thing she really is focusing on, is getting businesses back on track after the recent EF-1 tornado in the city of Athens. She went on to say, that since the Athens-Limestone area is growing, that she would like to see our young professionals prepared to lead the Athens-Limestone area in the future. Pammie Jimmar is also a member of the Chamber National Board of Trustees. As a member of the trustees, she helps strategic direction, and takes an active role in advancing standard operating and curriculum policies for the Institute for Organization Management (IOM). Being affiliated with the illustrious IOM, gives Ms. Jimmar an opportunity to be a part of the premier nonprofit developmental program for association and chamber professionals, fostering individual growth through interactive learning and networking opportunities. Ms. Pammie Jimmar is building a legacy that is HISTORIC, and today we are so happy to recognize her for Black History Month.

Ronnie Hawkins is a U S. Army Veteran, and a retired Federal Government employee whose selfless years of service earned him a number of honors in his illustrious career. A former Vice President of the Huntsville Chapter of Blacks In Government (BIG), Ronnie assisted the organization in its mission to ensure that equity, excellence and opportunity was afforded to all employees. He was, and continues to be a mentor, role-model and a leader in the community. He actively volunteers supporting non-profit organizations, as well as local charities, especially those that assist children and senior citizens. A natural leader, Mr. Hawkins was able to enhance those skills during his 30! years of service in the Army. A few of his other affiliations include being a Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., past President of the Members Only Social Club, being a member of the American Legion, and a Life Member of the NAACP. Ronnie Hawkins has truly carved out an amazing historic legacy he can be proud of, and today we are honored to recognize him for Black History Month.

Quisha Bryant, Esq. is the Parking and Public Transit Director for the City of Huntsville. A consummate professional, she oversees improvements to the transportation system in the city. Quisha continues to carve out her historic legacy in her hometown, contributing to make the mass transit system the best it can be. A natural born leader, Quisha is focused on keeping the two main modes of public transit moving. The Orbit fixed routes, which are the fixed bus routes falls under her control. She also manages the cities’ paratransit service, Access Huntsville, which picks up passengers at their door. A graduate of Tennessee State University, she also earned her law degree at John Marshall Law School. Quisha Bryant has a broad spectrum of experience, as she has also served as the Deputy Executive Director of the Huntsville Housing Authority for the City of Huntsville. Her passion is family, and Quisha Bryant has the primary goal of helping people. Today we are honored to recognize this hardworking and dedicated public servant for Black History Month

Otis Smith known affectionately as Big O – “The Mayor of Soul”, established himself as a legendary voice in the Huntsville radio market. A Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Army, his love of radio began with a stint at the Armed Forces Radio Network. A native of Memphis, TN, Big O is happy to call Huntsville home. An incredible human being, his historic broadcast career is defined by his zeal, excitement and passion for the radio industry. Big O never meets a stranger, and connects with people from all different walks of life. We celebrate our friend, Otis Smith aka “Big O”. He is a broadcast legend in the Tennessee Valley, and today we are beyond excited to recognize him for Black History Month

Rev. Dr. Clarence M. Johnson is Pastor of the historic Poplar Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Athens, AL. He leads a church that has served God’s people for some 140 years. The Pastor is an educator, encourager, and an effective leader who assumed the pastorship at Poplar Creek more than 30 years ago. He is a community advocate who has helped feed the hungry, lead the lost and prepare God’s People with powerful words of hope. A U.S. Army Veteran, he voluntarily served our country with both honor and dignity. His wife Donna has been a wonderful source of support, and they have an amazing family. Rev. Dr. Johnson has also served in a teaching capacity at the illustrious Huntsville Bible Institute, and is committed to teaching the Word of God to all. He is continuing to create a legacy that is historic, and is always humble when helping others!!! We are proud to recognize Rev. Dr. Clarence M. Johnson for Black History Month.

Kelvin Wooten is a Grammy winning singer, songwriter and producer who proudly calls the Tennessee Valley home. A graduate of J.O. Johnson High School and Alabama A&M University, Wooten is one of the most sought after names in the music industry. Artists immersed in a variety of music contact him whenever they want to score a hit song. Kelvin has collaborated with, and produced songs for some of the biggest names in music to include – Tony, Toni,Tone’, Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, J. Cole, Jazmine Sullivan and Anthony Hamilton. He even had a hand on the soundtrack for the movie Judas and The Black Messiah, as well as others. He is an uplifting positive force who is willing to help aspiring musical artists find their voice. One of the most talented producers in the music industry, he is such an outstanding person. Kelvin says, “… producing is like being a coach, and the musicians are the players.” He has created such a historic legacy, and continues to be a force in the industry. Tamika Alexander is the Evening News Anchor at WHNT News 19 here in Huntsville. Tamika is an Alabama Broadcaster Association award winning journalist, who came to the Tennessee Valley in 2024. She has immersed herself in the Huntsville community, by volunteering in a number of causes that make a difference in the lives of citizens in our area. For instance, she has participated in the United Way of Madison County – ARISE2READ program, the Central North Alabama Alumnae Chapter, of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. heart awareness event known as Rouge, and was a presenter for the Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast. A native Alabamian, she is also a graduate of the University of Alabama. Her passion, zeal and enthusiasm are evident in everything that she does. Tamika Alexander is creating a historic legacy that we know will stand the test of time. We are glad to recognize her today, as we celebrate Black History Month.

Deitrick Smart is the Director of the Robert “Bob” Harrison Senior Wellness and Advocacy Center in Huntsville. Mr. Smart oversees the day-to-day operations of the center, and ensures that it is a place that focuses on holistic health, advocacy and fun. The center which falls in the Madison County, District (6) area, is the perfect place to maintain fitness, while being a part of a well-rounded community. Deitrick Smart brings a wealth of experience, and is always willing to share his knowledge. The “Bob” Harrison Center continues to be a staple in the community, and his leadership is a contributing factor to that. Health, education and finance classes are available to those who are seeking help in those areas. Deitrick Smart plays a vital, and important role in the implementation of the programs that are offered. He is also creating a historic legacy in the district, and we are grateful for his hard work. Today, we recognize him and his accomplishments, as we celebrate Black History Month.

Christina Ashford is a modern day ‘Renaissance Woman’, who is a skilled orator, community leader and philanthropist. She utilizes her personal life experiences to reach God’s People, and to teach God’s Word. The daughter of a preacher, her mother is also ingrained in the Word and is a highly-respected Sunday School teacher. The cliche’, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, is so true. Christina continues to add on to her historic legacy, as a member of the National Coalition of Black Women – Greater Huntsville Area Chapter(NCBW-GHAC). She is an advocate of women and girls, always offering words of encouragement for our future leaders. Ms. Ashford also serves in a supervisory role as a Department of Army Civil Servant. She has the God-Given ability to manage and lead people in a fast-paced environment She has been honored with a number of awards by Command leadership for her hard work, and her incredible work ethic. Christina’s aforementioned work with girls, donating time to charities, and community activism are the intangibles that immediately stand out. Today, we are proud to recognize a woman of faith, Christina Ashford, as we celebrate Black History Month!!!!

Rev. Jerry L. Reeves is Pastor of the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Leighton, AL. He has led the flock at Galilee for nearly 50 years. Rev. Reeves is not only known for pastoring one of the most historic churches in North Alabama, he has blessed so many through his music ministry. A nationally renowned singer, he has recorded a number of albums that have reached thousands. Always lending comforting words of encouragement, and a leader of God’s People, we are so pleased to recognize him for his amazing work in the community. He is continuing to create a legacy that is historic in the Shoals area, and throughout North Alabama!!! Today , weare proud to recognize Rev. Jerry L. Reeves for Black History Month.

WE ARE AMERICAN HISTORY!!!!
Joe Jordan is a history making, groundbreaking-pioneer, who was the city’s first Black Fire Marshal. Mr. Jordan spent 40 years with the Huntsville fire department. A Vietnam veteran, he joined the city’s fire fighters in 1975, and at the time there were only a total of three minority employees in the city, all entry-level fire fighters. He climbed the ranks to become Fire Driver-Engineer and Fire Inspector/Investigator, before he was appointed as Fire Marshal in 1995. He is truly Black History, and we are proud to recognize him for everything he has done for our city. Today, we salute Joe Jordan for Black History Month.

Violet Edwards is the Madison County District 6 Commissioner, who made history, becoming the first Black Woman to win a seat on the Madison County Commission. It did not take Commissioner Edwards long to make an impact for her constituents, she secured a $5.2 million federal grant to provide emergency funds to Madison County residents, to help families who are struggling to pay rent and utilities because of the coronavirus pandemic. She continues to stand up for all the residents of Madison County, speaking up and taking action on issues that are pivotal to the community. Violet is the past Director of Christmas Charities Year Round, a non-profit, charitable organization that serves Madison County; and she has always been active on the front-lines looking to make a difference. Violet Edwards continues to shine in our community, and we are so proud of her. Today we are pleased to recognize Commissioner Violet Edwards, as we celebrate Black History Month.

Dr. Harry Hobbs is the Vice President of Employee Engagement for Huntsville Utilities. He is a U.S. Army Veteran, who has a strong and diverse work ethic. Dr. Hobbs has demonstrated expertise in leadership, community engagement, education, government affairs, and strategic planning. He is a true ‘Renaissance Man’s, and has developed young men and women through all walks of life. Dr. Hobbs is also the founder and visionary behind the yearly back to school event known as Community Awareness for Youth (C.A.F.Y). The event is out in place to help students in our area transition into adulthood. It focuses on education, careers, finances and health. CAFY connects students with local organizations offering mentorship opportunities as well. Dr. Harry Hobbs has truly been a blessing, and we are so happy to recognize him today, as we celebrate Black History Month.

Tracy Doughty is the President and Chief Operating Officer (COO)for Huntsville Hospital. A native of Fayette, AL – Me. Doughty is focused on maintaining the financial health and stability of the Huntsville Hospital system. He is also concerned with advancing diversity and inclusion efforts. It is important to Mr. Doughty to serve on a team that is committed to ensuring patient safety, and developing quality programs. A member of many local organizations, to include: The University of North Alabama Foundation, Huntsville Housing Authority Advisory Board, and the Calhoun Community College Foundation; he believes in giving back to the community. He represents the best of our community, and we are so happy to recognize Tracy Doughty as we celebrate Black History Month.

Rodney Gordon is a community advocate, change agent and activist. He has been an active voice of the people, and leader in the city of Decatur for years. Ensuring that citizens are afforded equal, fair and just opportunities, Mr. Gordon has constantly helped to draw attention to urgent matters throughout Morgan County. He has served as the president of the NAACP in Morgan County. He has worked alongside clergy, as well as other community leaders in unifying the city of Decatur during very turbulent times. Rodney Gordon has been at the forefront of many battles, and he continues to be a leader in the community. Today we recognize Mr. Gordon, as we celebrate Black History Month.

Dr. Randy Barbour was recently appointed as the Director of Multi Cultural Affairs for the City of Huntsville. Dr. Barbour, who previously served as Assistant Professor of Psychology at Alabama A&M University, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. He has served and led in so many other capacities. Spending time at the Harris Home for Children, North Alabama Center for Educational Excellence and The University of Alabama in Huntsville. He brings a fresh perspective with a simple but critical mission, to make life better for everyone. Dr. Barbour will continue the office’s mission of developing partnerships and programs and providing services in collaboration with local city agencies to create a vibrant and inclusive community where all people feel appreciated and valued. He understands the importance of ensuring that every member of our community has access to the opportunities that come with Huntsville’s growth and prosperity. Randy is so grateful for the opportunity to serve, and it is his goal to build upon the efforts of his predecessors to continue moving the needle forward for the development and success of Huntsville. Fredia Jackson is a graduate of Alabama A&M University, and an educator in the Huntsville City Schools system. She believes in fostering an inclusive and learning environment for all students. Her commitment and continuous efforts to enhance the educational experience for children seem to come naturally. Ms. Jackson has a zeal, and love for what she does that is unparallel. Not only is she able to provide her students with the tools they need to succeed, but Fredia’s ability to communicate with parents is an added asset. She openly discusses strengths, as well as weaknesses with parents and their children. Her dedication over the years in developing strong, spirited and successful students is fully noticed. Fredia Jackson was recently recognized as the 2024-25 Teacher of the Year, at the inaugural Huntsville City Schools Golden Apple Gala. She is one of the areas leading educators, and today we are happy to acknowledge her, as we continue to celebrate Black History Month.

Cleveland T. Wilson aka Murphy, is a retired educator, who has used his ministry of music to bless people from all different walks of life. A spirited servant of God, for 50 years his gift has helped to bless musicians not only here in the Tennessee Valley, but around the United States, and worldwide. Back in 2017, Mr. Wilson went viral, when he proposed to his wife, Lucinda in Big Spring Park in downtown Huntsville. He proudly held a sign on the red pedestrian bridge in the park that read, “She Said, Yes!!!” The engagement made national headlines, and inspired so many. Cleveland T. Wilson. Inspirational Choir Leader, Minister, Encourager and Friend. He is such a blessing to Huntsville and vicinity, and today, we are so proud to recognize Cleveland T. Wilson, also known as Murphy for Black History Month.

Bernard Simelton is the president of the Alabama NAACP, and is a NAACP Hall of Honor inductee. He has also served in the same position for the Huntsville -Madison-Limestone Community Action Partbership. A life member of the historic civil rights organization, Mr. Simelton was on the National NAACP Board of Directors, and is currently on boards for many groups throughout the state of Alabama. He is always willing to stand-up to speak on things that are relative and important to all underserved communities. We are thankful for his presence, and for all that he is doing. A leader who is in the front lines helping to make things diverse, equal and inclusive. Today, we proudly salute Bernard Simelton as we continue to celebrate Black History Month.

Rev. Edward Owens has been the Pastor of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist in Decatur, AL for 27 years. He has served God’s People faithfully, and willingly by providing counsel, advice and a positive words of encouragement to those that may be lost, hurt or broken. An educator, and a tremendous, leader he is joined in the ministry by his wife Dr. Claudette Owens. Reverend Owens is a community advocate, activist and mentor who continues to do his part by helping to feed the hungry, lead the lost, and prepare God’s People with hope. He is continuing to create a legacy that is historic, and is always humble when helping others!!! A powerful man of faith, we are proud to recognize Rev. Edward Owens for Black History Month.
